House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is squarely in the crosshairs of conservatives in the House.
McCarthy’s been on thin ice for a while because he has been slow to deliver on his promises.
And now Kevin McCarthy committed this unthinkable betrayal that will leave you red with rage.
Conservatives are holding McCarthy’s feet to the fire in the fight over government funding.
McCarthy made a commitment with conservatives to cut spending in order to win the Speaker’s gavel.
But now McCarthy is reneging on his end of the bargain.
The latest double cross by McCarthy came when the speaker announced he would include $300 million in funding for training the Ukrainians in a potential short-term continuing resolution to fund the government.
Funding for Joe Biden’s reckless and disastrous war in Ukraine became a red line for conservatives to oppose any continuing resolution.
McCarthy caved to Democrats and RINOs to leave the Ukraine money in a proposed continuing resolution.
“It became too difficult to do that, so we’re leaving it in,” McCarthy said of the Ukraine money.
This sellout infuriated conservatives.
“I’m not voting for any spending bill that places a higher priority on Ukraine’s border than our own,” Congressman Jim Banks declared.
The Ukraine war became a political embarrassment when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky showed up in the Canadian Parliament with an actual Nazi in tow.
Zelensky stood for a standing ovation as members of parliament cheered 98-year-old Yaroslav who fought for the Hunka First Ukrainian Division, also known as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division.
“We have here in the chamber today a Ukrainian-Canadian veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today, even at his age of 98,” Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota declared. “He’s a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service. Thank you.”
Zelensky palling around with Nazis hardened Republican opposition to including any money for Ukraine in a government funding bill.
“Why is Zelensky standing and clapping for Nazis in Canada? No more American Tax dollars for Ukraine!” Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on social media.
Kevin McCarthy can only afford to lose five votes in trying to pass a funding bill with just GOP votes.
McCarthy including Ukraine money in a continuing resolution means he will turn to Democrat votes to pass the bill.
And if McCarthy pulls that stunt, he will surely face a motion to vacate the chair and remove him as Speaker of the House.
